This
book is important! Keeping the memory alive of people like Noah Flug is
of crucial importance, particularly for young people in Germany, but
also throughout the world. I hope that life stories such as the story of
Noah Flug will help them become aware of what a blessing it is to live
in peace and freedom, which we can enjoy today in many places where, not
too long ago, hate and killing characterized relations between peoples
and nations. Those who are not prepared to learn lessons from the
fateful 20th century are in danger of repeating history. (...) Noah
Flug looked back at a long, horrific and almost unbelievable past—from
the Łódź Ghetto to Auschwitz and into the Bellevue Castle, where the
German Federal President Horst Köhler awarded him with the Great Cross
of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2006. I remember him with
a sense of amazement and gratitude. And I would like to thank Bettina
Schaefer for her dedication to his memory. She has examined his
excellent life’s work with sensitivity and consideration, thus
encouraging readers to reflect on his life. My thanks extend to all
participants who helped to make this book possible. It provides in-depth
glimpses into Noah Flug’s character and accomplishments. Flug was “a
Mentsh,” there’s no better way to say it, a trailblazer for us all, an
example.
I hope
this book will help prevent this history from being forgotten or dealt
with thoughtlessly or casually in the future; instead it should ensure
that history continues to bring forth realizations, awareness and a
sense of responsibility for one another and for this global society in
which we live.
